Marlborough, Wiltshire

Marlborough High Street

The High Street in Marlborough, Wiltshire, is the widest in England. The town was devastated by a fire in 1679, after which the High Street was widened so that a coach and horse team could turn around easily. The town, at that date for decades to come, was an important staging post on the main road from London to Bath and Bristol [now the A4].
